Logan County man charged with threatening Little League umpire

LOGAN, W.Va. — A Logan County man faces charges after a confrontation with an umpire at a Little League baseball game.

Deputies charged Franklin Darby, 63, of Whitman, W.Va. with brandishing a deadly weapon and assault on an athletic official.

Court documents claim Darby was heckling and antagonizing Umpire Dustin Harvey during a game back on Monday evening. According to the criminal complaint Harvey removed his umpiring gear and left the field, but Darby followed him continuing to curse and yell at him.

During the encounter, Darby is alleged to have pulled out a knife and said to Harvey, “I’ll gut you right here.”

Law enforcement was contacted, but Darby had left the scene before they arrived. Nobody was injured.
