Marshall guard Andrew Taylor enters transfer portal

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall’s men’s basketball team took a major hit Monday with an announcement from senior point guard Andrew Taylor that he had entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Taylor, a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection last season, is reportedly being offered by several Power 5 schools. A graduate transfer, he has one season of eligibility remaining, but brings with him plenty of scoring punch shown in the past.

During an impressive 2022-23 season, Taylor averaged 20.2 points per game with a career-best 83 three-pointers, nearly five rebounds and five assists. He shot 80 percent from the free-throw line and averaged two steals as well. Taylor rarely rested, playing more than 36 minutes on average.

Taylor’s departure causes problems for veteran head coach Dan D’Antoni, whose only returning point guard is sophomore Kyle Braun, whose playing time has been limited to this point. Braun played in six games last season and scored 6 points.

A native Corbin, Ky., Taylor native began his college career at Furman.

He finished with 1,609 points at Marshall for a 14.6 per game average. Taylor also finished with 456 assists and 201 steals while averaging more than 34 minutes of action in four seasons.

Taylor and Herd senior wing Taevion Kinsey were the only Division 1 duo to each average 20-plus points last season.

Taylor’s departure is the second exit of a player pivotal to Marshall’s success last season. Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Micah Handlogten entered the portal earlier this offseason and has since committed to Florida.
